FG wants Senate President arrested for absence at corruption trial

The Federal Ministry of Justice is seeking the arrest of Senate President, Bukola Saraki over his absence at an ongoing corruption trial at the Code of Conduct Tribunal.  The Code of Conduct Bureau has accused Saraki of 13 counts of corruption and his trial commenced today, September 18, 2015. A deputy director in the office of the Attorney General of the Federation, M.S. Hassan, who filed the charges against Saraki, applied for the arrest order. Diamond Bank employee arrested for N111.2m fraud

A staff of Diamond Bank Obioha Okengwu was yesterday arraigned before Justice Mohammed Yunusa of a Federal High Court, Lagos over a nine count charge of fraud. He is accused of allegedly defrauding the bank of N111.2 million. According to prosecuting counsel, Obioha, a graduate of Abia State University, committed the offence between April and August 2014 while working at the e-Business unit of the bank, handling daily settlement entries of transactions done on Point of Sales (POS) and Automated Teller Machine Obioha unlawfully credited huge sums of money into his family’s account instead of the bank’s accounts. “At different times, N37million and N41. 4 million was lodged into two accounts owned by one Uchenna Okengwu. The accused also credited the sum of N10 million into the account of one Rosamund Okengwu and N9.5 million paid into one Chukwuemeka Okengwu’s account.” the prosecuting counsel told the court. EFCC Impostor caught pants down in the middle of shady deal

Samson Irefin, a staff of the National Biotechnology Development Agency, NABDA has been arrested for attempting to dupe a NAFDAC contractor, Liuideco Global Services Limited while posing as an EFCC official.  He told the contractor that he can help “kill” a pending investigation by the EFCC, demanding a huge sum of N500,000 to be paid for it to be done. Irefin was picked up by operatives of the EFCC in the early hours of Friday September 11, 2015 while transacting with his ‘client’ in a bank in Abuja. Apparently, the would-be victim, after being approached by Samson with his promises and knowing he isn’t guilty of any crime, contacted EFCC and laid a complaint about the supposed ‘help’, and was asked to play along by the anti-graft agency. The EFCC says Irefin will be charged to court after investigation is concluded.

Ukrainian forces and pro- Russian separatists accused each other on Thursday of shelling civilian areas near the rebel-held city of Donetsk in eastern Ukraine despite a ceasefire, with four civilians and one soldier killed. A Ukrainian military spokesman told a news briefing that two men were killed in Dzerzhynsk, north of the regional hub, when separatists opened fire from Horlivka, 7.5 km (4.7 miles) away. The state prosecutor said one Ukrainian serviceman was also killed in the attack. Separatists, in turn, accused Ukrainians of using tanks and artillery in an overnight attack on Horlivka in which a man and a woman were killed. The casualty reports could not be independently verified. More than 6,500 people have been killed since the fighting broke out in April last year. Attacks have lessened since a peace agreement was brokered in Minsk, Belarus, in February, but both sides accuse each other of violating the ceasefire.

Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai has filed a case in a state High Court to challenge a news report which accused him of declaring assets worth N90billion.  The Union Newspapers had reported that El-Rufai made the declaration of assets at the Code of Conduct Bureau. Tunnel operator Eurotunnel confirmed the intrusion on Twitter, saying it had caused traffic delays. Such disruption has become common as some 5,000 migrants, mostly from Africa and the Middle East, have set up camp around the northern French port and regularly try to board trucks travelling by the rail tunnel or by ferry to Britain.

Twelve people remain hospitalised in South Korea and under treatment for MERS although only one is still testing positive for the MERS virus, the Health Ministry said, adding that no new cases have been reported since July 4. Woman dies trying to break up fight between her husband and son

Ann Hay , 55, intervened when husband David and son Robbie fell out at a hotel in Queensland, Australia . Suspected suicide bomber dies in explosion

A suspected male suicide bomber died on Monday after detonating his Improvised Explosive Devise (IED) near a military check point at Jumtilo , near Maiduguri . Eye witnesses told newsmen in Maiduguri that the bomber had boarded a commercial bus from a village to Maiduguri but other passengers bacame suspicious of his activities. " He boarded the vehicle along Damaturu road but we became suspecious of him after he bagan to show some kind of restlessness. We tried to alert security agents at a check before he blew off himself for fear of arrest ,'' Mallam Farta Modu , a witness, said. Mr Aderemi Opadokun the Borno Commissioner of Police confirmed the report. " A suicide bomber died when the IED he strapped to his body exploded close to troops check point in Jumtilo around 1130 hours . " Only the bomber died while one other person was injured and taken to hospita l,'' Opadokun said.

Governor declares 2nd Lekki-Epe Expressway toll-free

Lagos State Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode, has declared that no toll will be collected at the second point on the Lekki- Epe Expressway. Ambode also assured that his government would be one of continuity with improvement. According to reports, the inauguration of Nigeria’s 8th National Assembly has been postponed. The gates of the Assembly complex are said to have been shut by police officers keeping out both legislators and staff of the legislative house. The security officials reportedly told people gathered outside the gate that the inauguration had been called off.  Michigan is now the 21st state to confirm a case of bird flu since late 2014 and the 6th to detect it only in wild or free-ranging bids .  The United States is currently battling what is being described as the worst outbreak of bird flu in the country. According to Reuters, Michigan yesterday (Monday) reported that Canadian geese in the state tested positive for a lethal strain of bird flu, bringing the worst outbreak of the disease in US history to a 21st state. Director of the  Michigan Department of Natural Resources, Keith Creagh said the state is now focusing on preventing the spread of the disease to poultry. South African athlete Oscar Pistorius is set to be released from prison on parole in August after serving 10 months for culpable homicide in the killing of his model girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp , a family member said.
